The course Event Management provides a theoretical and practical basis for understanding the main principles of event management. Event management is presented as a field of study based predominantly on economics, psychology and marketing. The graduate of the course is able to plan and organise various types of events and meetings, including billing, contracting and negotiation. The student is able to navigate within the supplier segment, knows the principles of planning work and incentive programs, and understands the difference between profit and non-profit events. The student is also familiar with the fundamentals of negotiating in the international environment with an emphasis on cultural differences of the event participants. The course also includes an introduction to the nature of a competitive destination within the international meetings industry. The course also reflects the trends and challenges of recent years, with an emphasis on the coronavirus pandemic or the growing interest in digital or environmentally responsible events.
The course consists of the main blocks listed below:
- Event management as a multidisciplinary field of study. Basic theories, principles and practices in event management. Overview of key concepts and related disciplines. Specifics of event management and planning, types of event managers. Psychological approach to event manager's personality. Time management, priority management and risk minimization.
- Supplier segment. Hotels, restaurants, catering, hostesses, tour guides and other professions and entities. Menu selection in an international environment. Types of event programmes. Protocol and details of implementing set-up of multicultural events.
- Contract, budget, necessary legal bases of events. Basic points and elements of contracts concluded between event managers and suppliers or sponsors. Payment and cancellation conditions. Force majeure. Negotiation.
- Event marketing and event communication. The so-called communication circle, i.e. communication before, during and after the event. PR and event marketing in an international environment. Convention bureau, DMC, DMO.
- Trends in event management in recent years. The most successful international event destinations: conditions for success. Digital events, impact of the coronavirus pandemic, influence of geopolitical factors. Sustainable and green events.
